Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), is a blood test that can reveal inflammatory activity in your body. ESR test is not a standalone diagnostic tool, but it can help your doctor diagnose or monitor the progress of an inflammatory disease.
ESR test can also help determine the severity of your inflammatory response and monitor the effect of treatment.
ESR is a nonspecific marker of inflammation and can be increased in a variety of conditions such as injury, infection or even sometimes in the elderly without any relevant clinical condition. Clinical correlation is advised in interpreting ESR values.
